Highlights from "Working Girl"

Alright, this post is going to wrap up my little series on "The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl: Real Life Career Advice You Can Actually Use" by Karen Burns. Click here to find my complete review here, and my post on Working Girl's 10 Best Eternal Truths.)

When writing my review, I typed up some of the amazing parts of the book that really stood out to me. I'd like to share those with you now. These are only a few, small parts, so again, I encourage you to buy the book for yourself.

You WILL Leave Your Job
"Consider this fact: The probability of you leaving any job is precisely 100%. Really. You are positively absolutely going to leave that job, whether you quit, are fired, retire, or die....You are in the driver's seat. Don't be like Working Girl—take control of your life!" (Page 26)
This excerpt reminds me of Careerealism's business-of-one mindset that has really stuck with me since I did a Twitter internship with the company back in 2009. If one idea has stuck with me since then, this is it.

Security is a Myth
"...there's only one thing you need to know about security, and that is that it doesn't exist. Security is the loosiest and goosiest of feelings. You can feel secure when you're not at all. You can feel insecure when you're really quite safe....Nothing, not hard work, not education, not seniority, not connections—nothing—guarantees your continued employment at a particular company." (Page 46)

Networking is Key; Seek out a Mentor
"Most jobs are not advertised. You find them through contacts....And here's a tip for younger working girls: Aim your calls toward senior executives. They are sometimes willing to help a young person and are at a place in their lives when they may want to mentor. Plus they won't be threatened by your assertiveness." (Pages 92-93)

Strive to Work for a Boss You Respect and Can Learn From
"Hiring Your Boss You can tell a lot about potential bosses at a first meeting. how do they talk and gesture, will they look you in the eye, what does their workspace look like, do they speak well of their employees? You want a boss who will look out for you, who will teach you new things, and who will help you get to where you ultimately want to go." (Popout box on Page 97)

Personality and Office Culture Affect Hiring A LOT
"Jobs don't go to the best candidates. Jobs go to the candidates employers like best. Therefore, your primary task at any interview is to make the employer like you." (Page 103)

Try, Try, and Try Again
"Persistence is the key to living an exceptional life." (Page 172)

Reaching Your Goals Will Be Hard, But Persistence Pays Off
"When people say, 'Be persistent,' what they're really saying is, 'Force yourself to keep trying even when your efforts are failing and—oh, by the way?—we don't care how hard it is.' You will have days, maybe lots of them, when you are ready to give up. Rejection and failure truly suck. There is only one cure. When you are feeling at your lowest, your most miserable, your most defeated, do a tiny little thing that moves you toward your goal. You will correspondingly, feel a tiny bit better. Next step: Do another tiny thing....That's the persistence loop. Action leads to success, which leads to more action. And more success." (Page 173)

Take the Leap, Even When You Don't Feel Ready (You Never Will)
"Imagine the worst possible thing that could happen if you took the risk. Make a plan for dealing with it (you will probably never have to use this plan). Teach yourself to welcome fear as a sign that you're stretching yourself. At one point you will need to stop preparing and start acting, whether you feel ready or not (you won't). Close your eyes and jump." (Page 178)

Know Yourself
"When it comes to jobs, you need to know who you are and what you have to offer." (Page 180)

Working Girl's 10 Best "Eternal Truths"

I hope you are celebrating the day by NOT working on this Fourth of July holiday.

I'll keep this post short and sweet today and continue my unsolicited praise for all things Working Girl.

Here is a short list of Working Girl's 10 Best "Eternal Truths." You can find these truths and more in Karen Burns' book "The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl: Real Life Career Advice You Can Actually Use."

Click here if you missed my review.

Working Girl's 10 Best "Eternal Truths"

10. Things seem impossible only until you do them.

9. If you don't ask for something, you will never get it.

8. Make friends before you need them.

7. The farther out of your comfort zone you leap, the more people will step forward to catch you.

6. Authority isn't given to you; it comes from you.

5. It's the stuff you don't do that you regret the most.

4. Believing you know it all is a sure sign of ignorance.

3. How you actually do your work is as important as the actual work you do.

2. Life is supposed to be a little bit dangerous.

1. It's never too late to be the person you were meant to be.

A Review: The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl

Yesterday I started brainstorming about what to write about in today's blog post. (In case you haven't picked up on the trend, I'm trying to post every day.) My eyes wandered to my bookcase, home of some of my favorite books. These books are almost exclusively focused on grammar, careers, journalism, personal finance, design, and fitness. (When I'm interested in something, you know it!)

A clean, pink and white cover caught my eye. Once I opened "The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl: Real Life Career Advice You Can Actually Use" by Karen Burns, I knew I'd found the topic for today's post. I did NOT know it would also inspire the four other posts bouncing around in my brain. That's inspiration for ya.

I won this book in a Twitter contest back in July 2009. Yes, that is almost exactly four years ago. Check out this excerpt from my post giving a shout out to the author.
Recently I’ve LOVED learning more about @workinggirl, aka Karen Burns. I’ve been following her tweets and two weeks ago won her Twitter contest for a FREE copy of her book, “The Amazing Adventures of Working Girl.” And I’m absolutely loving reading it.(I’m hoping to finish soon, but my free time has gotten away from me recently.) Not only does she offer practical career advice (derived from personal experiences from 59 different jobs) but she’s created this amazingly cute, girly, witty and sassy brand surrounding the entire product. (I love the polka dots, pink, and little cartoons, as well as the fun atmosphere it all creates.)
I planned to write up all my thoughts, but, um, that never happened. Well, I might not be timely, but, dang it, I follow through! Eventually...

Does anyone else have books that look like this after one read? (Yes, those sticky tabs are from four years ago.)

Let me say this first: I love this book. Seriously. If my many, many tabs don't show how much fantastic stuff Karen Burns covers, let me tell you that she presents great career—and life—advice in a way that is real, relatable, fun, and informative. As I reviewed the book again, I honestly think it was written specifically for me today. I also think it was written specifically for the me four years ago. While I'm typing up some of my favorite excerpts, I'm blown away how much this book speaks to me. I'm almost to the point where I'm typing entire pages. A book that offers that much great content is exactly the kind of book I want to read.

I'll share some of my favorite highlights here, but I definitely think you should read this book for yourselves. And, even better, you can get it for a penny on Amazon. That's a deal, folks.

The book is based on the author's work experience (59 jobs ya'll!), and shares hard-earned wisdom that women everywhere can benefit from. The three sections (Clueless, Confident, and Carefree) are made up of chapters, each presenting a specific lesson learned at one of Working Girl's jobs. (I would have loved to be in the editing sessions to fine tune this book.)

The chapters are dotted with job survival tips, "eternal truths," do's & don'ts, various exercises, doodled charts and tables, and tons of cute illustrations. It's the kind of book that allows you to jump from section to section, following the career path you most relate to and the advice you most need.

Working Girl talks about the myth of security in a job and why she turned down an offer to stay on "permanately" after a holiday temp job. She shares tips on maintaining a good relationship with a boss, i.e. "managing your boss." She shares her experience walking away from a "respectable and okay-paying PR manager job and boarding a plane to Paris, where she had no job."

Whether you are looking to discover your true path (Page 252), quit a job with class (Page 130), measure your success (Page 236), learn to be lucky (Page 250), or take a career leap (Page 176), this book has something for you. Check out a few sample chapters here.

And all this fantastic content is also presented in a way that inspires Karianne the writer, the gal who wants to write a book of her own. I'm telling you, this kind of inspiring content is priceless. (I might be Working Girl's prime audience.) To avoid rambling on for much longer, I'm stopping now, but come back later this week for posts sharing "Working Girl's 10 Best 'Eternal Truths'" and my top excerpts from the book.

I'll leave you with just one highlight:
"A huge sign that you've found your true calling is that you are little bit afraid of it....At the same time, your true calling feels very right. It seems comfortable and inevitable. You don't mind the risks and problems, you make any sacrifices with joy, you are filled with energy." (Page 234)

My Life in Instagrams—June Edition

Can you believe it's July? I know it's cliche but it's crazy how time flies. I am excited about life though and looking forward to the holiday this week.

Today I'm sharing with you the second round of "My Life in Instagrams," this time giving a little pictural update on my life through June. If you follow me on Instagram, you've probably already seen a few these, but maybe you'll enjoy a little more info about them. Enjoy.

If you know me but at all, you know I'm a slight Taylor Swift fan. OK, slight might be downplaying it a bit. OK, fine, I love her. I had awesome tickets (in the pit) for her Red concert in Salt Lake City. She may have touched my hand. I may have not washed it for a week. (I jest...promise.)

I got certified to teach Zumbatomic (more easily known as Zumba kids) when I attended the Zumba Instructor conference in Los Angeles in February. Since I started teaching Zumba and Zumba Toning at the Provo Recreation Center, I've also had the opportunity to start teaching this fun kids class! So I added two more classes to my schedule (I currently have 8 scheduled classes a week and sub at least 2-3 as well.) I teach the 4-7 year olds and love it!

This one has two parts. 1) My little brother is back from serving a two-year mission for the LDS Church (Mormons) in San Fransisco and is attending school again at Brigham Young University in Provo. It's fun to have a sibling close by again. Plus we got to kick off the outdoor summer concert season together at the  Refinement Tour featuring The Voice contestants with Utah connections: Ryan Innes, Amy Whitcomb, Midas Whale (who preformed 8 inches from our seats and includes Jon Peter Lewis from American Idol and whose solo record I love), and also the band Fictionist (not associated with The Voice).

Yea, we're cool...but more than ready for this concert to start. Seriously. We're 40 minutes past the start time. by @kariannesali

Oh yea, I quit my job. No biggie. I have a huge portfolio of samples of projects from this position. If you are interested in checking out my work, feel free.

I am studying, studying, and studying. I will be taking my Group Exercise certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America in July. This is the next step in becoming a better instructor and also expanding what classes I'm able and qualified to teach. I hope to add more pump and sculpt classes eventually. Plus having a national certification can really make you more marketable and help you stand out from the dozens of dozens of instructors in this area. :)

And my nerdy self has been mourning the demise of Google Reader. Not that any of you who visit are surprised after my several posts on the subject this past week. Hey, it's been a big part of my life people. Don't judge me.

Aw every time, I get a tad nostalgic. Check out www.writedreamsweat.com for what to do for life after Google Reader. #googlereader #reader #feedly #bloglovin #bloggers #howto by @kariannesali

Replace Google Reader: How to Transfer to Feedly

Today is your last day with Google Reader. Last week I kicked my procrastinating self into gear and focused on exploring the options to replace my Reader addiction.

Check out my posts "So Long, Google Reader," and "5 Steps to Export Your Google Reader Data" for some more info.

I'll walk you through the very easy setup options for the programs BlogLovin (click for post) and Feedly. I'm not sure if you'll be able to directly export your info after July 1, 2013, so I'd suggest setting up accounts TODAY or exporting your data to transfer later. You can always play around with the programs and choose which you'll use later.

Feedly

Here are some steps to import your data. It is very, very easy.

Step 1: Go to Feedly.com. Click button that says "One-click Google Reader Import." If you are already signed into a Google account, the popup will let you select which account your Reader is currently associated with. You will then accept Feedly's request to your info and such.

Step 2: That's pretty much it! That one-click button is pretty accurate. Once your import is complete, you'll see a screen that looks like this.

Feedly is very straight forward (which I like about it). It has several view options. The above view is under "All."

Or you click "Today," you see something like this.

You can also click "Index" and see a view like this with the capability to organize your feeds and such. (I desperately need to do that.)

You can also customize the themes and set your preferences. (So you can set your default view to whichever option you prefer.)

And don't forget the Feedly mobile app. It operates pretty much exactly like the website.

This is the main view:

In the categories, you can select the view options. (See the tiles above "Refresh")

Anyways, that's pretty much it! I'm very much liking the simplicity of this program. What do you think?

Replace Google Reader: How to Transfer to Bloglovin

Today is your last day with Google Reader. Last week I kicked my procrastinating self into gear and focused on exploring the options to replace my Reader addiction.

Check out my posts "So Long, Google Reader," and "5 Steps to Export Your Google Reader Data" for some more info.

I'll walk you through the very easy setup options for the programs BlogLovin and Feedly (click for post). I'm not sure if you'll be able to directly export your info after July 1, 2013, so I'd suggest setting up accounts TODAY or exporting your data to transfer later.

BlogLovin

For the personal blogging types (specifically a lot of craft, mommy and fitness blogs), Bloglovin seems to have been promoted in those communities as the only option to replace Google Reader. Great marketing, Bloglovin!

Here are some steps to import your data. It is very easy and very self explanatory.

Step 1: Go to Bloglovin.com. Click button that says "Join Bloglovin"

Step 2: Set up your account either through Facebook or an email. (I'm one of those who does not like things all connected to Facebook...I don't know why.) If you select Facebook, it will pop up with an option to grant access. Otherwise you'll enter your info and click a link that is set to your email account.

Step 3: Once you verify your account through email or Facebook, you'll have the option to import your blogs from Reader.

Step 4: Walaaa. You are done. Check out the home screen.

Bloglovin's features do a lot more for blog promotion than a simple RSS feed program. For example, even when you check your feed's, you'll be able to see it in the blog frame, i.e. you'll see the blog design with a Bloglovin bar across the top.

You'll also be exposed to a lot of different blogs (and as a blogger, you'll be able to promote your blog in different ways). You'll find options to visit popular posts and many featured categories and more. Bloglovin has a lot to offer if you want to explore some more.

Motivation Monday: No Regrets—Explore, Dream, Discover

Happy Monday folks! Wow, it seems like it's been a long time since...last Monday. Not so. It has only been one lovely week or seven lovely days. How did that go for you? My week went pretty great. I'm excited about the progress I made, meager as it was.

I selected today's motivational quote as a reminder to go after what you want. I'm not really the kind of person who dwells on regrets, but I'm trying to embrace the opportunities I have right now to "sail away from the safe habor" as Mark Twain states. I don't want to be the one who lives my life only doing the expected, responsible things. I'm lucky to be in a position where taking a leap of faith and making things happen are possible and not too incredibly risky for me. But it would be SO incredibly easy NOT to take that leap. Leading up to my decision to stop working fulltime, I had several opportunities present themselves, and it would have been easy to toss out my plans and go with another  option—a responsible, expected one. My thought is that there will always be another opportunity to make that kind of decision. Today, I'm throwing off the bowlines and striving to focus more on the opportunities to explore, dream, and discover.
